Common Pool Table Repairs

Most repair calls fall into a few categories: cushions that don't rebound the way they should, pockets that are torn or coming loose, and slate problems that affect the roll of the ball. Here's what each one involves.

Pool Table Cushion & Rail Repair

Cushions — sometimes called bumpers or rail cushions — are the rubber strips inside the rails that the ball bounces off during play. Over time, rubber can harden or lose its spring. When that happens, players usually notice the ball doesn't rebound the way it used to: it might come back weak, stop short, or bounce inconsistently from one rail to the next. This is often described as a "dead" rail.

Rail cushion problems are a physical repair, separate from the cloth on top of them. If your cushions feel dead but your cloth is otherwise in decent shape, this is a repair issue rather than a full refelting job. In some cases, cushion work and refelting may be handled during the same service because both involve work around the rails and cloth.

Pool Table Pocket Repair & Replacement

Pockets take a lot of wear, especially the leather or leather-look pockets found on most home and commercial tables. Cracking, tearing, stretching, and pockets that have come loose from the rail are all common issues. A pocket that's failing can drop balls awkwardly or fail to hold them properly, which is both a play problem and, in some cases, a safety concern for the balls themselves.

Slate Repair, Replacement & Slate Problems

The slate is the flat stone bed underneath the cloth, and it's what makes a pool table play true. Slate can develop problems at the seams where sections meet, or from chips and cracks caused by impact or age. When the slate isn't sound, balls can drift, hop, or deflect in ways that have nothing to do with how the game is being played.

Depending on the extent of the damage, slate issues may call for repair or replacement. The extent of the damage helps determine whether repair or replacement is the better option.

Pool Table Leveling & Playability Problems

Leveling isn't a separate service on its own — it's part of getting a table to play correctly, especially after repair, reassembly, or a move. If the frame or slate isn't level, balls can drift toward one side of the table even when everything else is in good condition. Not every drift problem is caused by leveling, but it's one of the first things worth checking when a table isn't playing true.

Repair vs. Refelting

Repair and refelting are related but different jobs. Repair covers physical table problems involving components such as cushions, pockets, slate, and related playability issues. Refelting is the replacement of the cloth itself.

If your table's cloth is worn, torn, stained, or has lost its tension, that's a pool table refelting job. If the problem is with the rails, pockets, or the slate underneath the cloth, that's repair. Many jobs involve both, since repairing cushions or slate usually means the cloth has to come off anyway.

Signs Your Pool Table May Need Repair

A few signs that point toward a repair issue rather than routine wear:

• The ball rebounds weakly or inconsistently off the rails
• Cushions feel hard or stiff rather than springy when pressed
• A pocket is torn, stretched, or pulling away from the rail
• You can see damage or separation at a slate seam
• The ball consistently drifts toward one side of the table
• The table feels unstable or the problem became visible while the table was being taken apart or set back up

Any of these can be a sign the table needs professional evaluation — some are minor, others point to a bigger repair.

Repairs During a Move or Reassembly

Physical problems with a pool table often become visible when the table is disassembled, moved, or put back together. Disassembly can expose cushions, slate seams, hardware, and other components that aren't visible during normal play, so issues sometimes surface at that stage that weren't obvious before.
