Most customers call the playing surface "felt," but billiard cloth is the technically accurate term — true felt isn't actually used on a pool table bed. You'll hear the job described several ways: refelting, recovering, felt replacement, or cloth replacement. They all refer to the same service: removing the old playing surface and installing new cloth over the slate and rails.

What's Included in a Professional Refelting

A professional refelting job generally involves:

1. Removal of the existing cloth from the bed and rails
2. Inspection and preparation of the slate, including cleaning old staples, glue, or wax residue and checking for seams that need attention
3. Cutting and fitting new cloth to the table's exact dimensions
4. Installing and tensioning the cloth so the surface is smooth, taut, and free of wrinkles or bubbles — tension is what determines how true the roll is
5. Recovering the rails, where applicable, so cushions and bed cloth match
6. Reassembling the table, including rails, pockets, and rail bolts, and checking for level
